And there’s Gwen, who remains outside their academic circle, but emerges as crucial of their group as they dabble, half believing, partly skeptical, in arcane arts.

Spanning forty years, the author shifts with natural fluency through various literary forms: as the companions strive to manage the circumstances they find themselves in by, in different ways, picking people who are obviously evil to offer up, or seeking means to slay the beast themselves, we go from suspense to dark fantasy, black-ops torture to love story to terror. A standout transition was to a quest story, far beneath the surface under the English county, a part infused with JRR Tolkien that was magnificently horrifying.

An Expansive Mosaic of Fear and Courage

We encounter trolls – bridge-dwelling ones and online ones, truly terrifying and superbly depicted. The story includes mystic weapons and deceptions, breath-taking moments of bravery and instances of dreadful evil, both earthly and supernatural. It stands as a masterpiece: a chilling book that is chiefly a paean to the imagination, and to love and friendship. “We longed for a tale to embrace and {now we’ve got one|presently we possess it|currently we hold it,” says this character as the friends assemble around a surface, making preparations to call forth their beast into being with the force of their minds.
